Reflecting on Motherhood: A Doula's Journey Through Birth

As a doula, I've had the privilege of supporting mothers through their birthing experiences. Each birth is unique, but there are moments that resonate deeply with me, reminding me of my own journey into motherhood at 27.

Looking back, I wish I could have approached my own birth with the knowledge and tools I possess now. Money was tight then, and I made decisions based on financial constraints rather than prioritizing the support I truly needed. I opted out of hiring a doula, thinking I could manage on my own, but now I see the value of having that extra guidance and advocacy during labor.

Instead, my partner and I attended private in-home birthing classes, which were beneficial but couldn't fully prepare us for the challenges we faced. When my milk didn't come in, I wish I had sought the help of a lactation consultant sooner. It's incredible how much difference their expertise can make in establishing breastfeeding successfully.

My daughter Ruby's birth was not without complications. After a long induction and epidural, she became stuck in the birth canal. The medical team intervened with vacuum extraction, forceps, and an episiotomy, leaving me physically and emotionally drained. Ruby's subsequent NICU stay, due to a hematoma and pneumothorax from inhaling meconium, added to the already challenging postpartum period.

What stands out to me now is how my mental health was overlooked during that time. The hospital staff focused on the physical aspects of recovery, but the emotional toll went unaddressed. It's a reminder of the importance of holistic care during the postpartum period, addressing both the physical and emotional well-being of mothers.

Despite the challenges, motherhood has been a transformative journey. Through my own experiences, I've gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of birth and the importance of advocating for oneself. As a doula, I'm grateful for the opportunity to empower and educate others, helping them make informed decisions that align with their needs and desires.

Looking back at that moment when I first met Ruby, after hours of uncertainty and worry, I'm filled with a mix of emotions. If I could go back, I would wrap my arms around my younger self, offering reassurance and wisdom gained from years of growth. Motherhood is a journey of resilience and growth, and I'm proud of how far I've come since those challenging days.

This journey has taught me the power of support, the importance of self-care, and the beauty of embracing the unexpected twists and turns along the way. And as I continue to support other mothers through their own birthing experiences, I carry with me the lessons learned from my own journey, guiding them with empathy, compassion, and unwavering support.
